Roosevelt was selected in 2005- 2006 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to be a CollegeBoard EXCELerator School. At the time we were only 1 of 11 schools nationwide chosen, and since then several other CPS schools have joined the project. Under this grant, we offer the CollegeBoard’s rigorous SpringBoard English and Math curricula to all students. This curricula seeks to “grow” freshmen into an upperclassmen equipped to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Incoming freshmen may also elect to join AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a class that teaches effective study skills and develops each student’s personal responsibility for learning.

Around the nation, students with AVID, SpringBoard, and AP backgrounds have higher college graduation rates than students who have not had these academic opportunities.
