Students & the Library
STUDENT USE

Students are welcome in the Library Media Center (LIBRARY) from 1st period (7:30 A.M.) to 10th period (4:05 P.M.), during their lunch periods, or with a pass from a teacher.

If a student has a pass he or she must hand this to the librarian at the circulation desk.

A student may receive a pass from the librarians at the start of the lunch period to go to the lunchroom and return to the library. They must return from the lunchroom within 25 minutes of receiving the pass.

Students choosing to stay in the library for the entire lunch period will not be allowed to leave.

If the library is full with classes we will not allow lunch students. This is on a period by period basis, so it may vary throughout the day. We suggest students ask when entering the library.

Students must wear an ID at all times in the library.

No food or drinks are allowed in the library.

STUDENT CIRCULATION POLICIES

Students can check out books for two weeks at a time. They may renew books.

Students can check out three books on any one topic. This is to ensure that one student does not eliminate an entire subject area. Since, many students have similar research projects, this is a necessary rule.

Students may take out three books at a time.

Students may not check out videos or magazines. These are too difficult or expensive to replace when lost by students.

COMPUTERS/INTERNET

Students wishing to use the Internet must have a permission form signed by parent or guardian on file. Unless the student has handed in his or her form, they will be unable to use the Internet.

Teachers bringing classes to the library are responsible for their students' use of the Internet. We do not require Internet permission from students who are with a teacher; this is at the teacher’s discretion.

Students must check in at the desk before using the Internet. They will sign their name, division number and time in the log book.

Students are only allowed to use the Internet to do school related projects or research. Students are not allowed to use chat rooms, play games, watch videos or download files. Students can lose their privileges if they are found on inappropriate websites.

Students are welcome to use the Internet to apply to colleges or do research for college.

Students can do word processing on any computer in the library.

Students can print five pages for their school and home assignments for free. Additional copies are 10 cents a page. Floppy discs are available for a small fee at the circulation desk.

OVERDUES / FINES

Overdue notices will be sent to the student's Division teacher on a regular basis. We ask teachers to help us in passing out these notices. These notices are very important in keeping down the number of lost materials.

There is 10 cents per day fine for late library books. We also require students to pay for a book they have lost. They may however work in the library to pay for lost books.

A student with an overdue book will not be allowed to check out any other books nor will be allowed to use the Internet.

END OF THE YEAR DUE DATES

The final due date for all books will be May 31. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule.

We do not have much time to retrieve books at the end of the school year, thus the reason for the May 31st due date. Every year we lose hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars in lost, stolen, or misplaced books and other materials. Please understand our reasons for these due dates.

All other rules of Roosevelt High School and the CPS Uniform Discipline Code not mentioned above apply in the Library Media Center.

Thank you for your cooperation and welcome to our Library Media Center!

Sincerely,

Ms. S. Licciardi
